Biowisdom Selected by AstraZeneca to Create Custom Vocabulary Assertional Meta-Data in Effort to Improve Drug Safety Assessments

BioWisdom Ltd (BioWisdom), a market leader in delivering healthcare intelligence to the pharmaceutical industry, today announced that AstraZeneca, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, has selected them to apply the Sofia platform to generate a rich vocabulary and assertional meta-data from thousands of AstraZeneca-owned toxicology reports.

The project will make accessible the wealth of historical toxicological observations reported on AstraZeneca development compounds. BioWisdom will help convert documents to machine readable formats, entity extraction and derivation of a detailed lexicon, semantic normalisation using BioWisdom’s extensive terminology set, mapping to BioWisdom hierarchies and other standard public vocabularies and the generation of assertional meta-data.

“We are delighted to be able to work with AstraZeneca on this project. The project builds on our Safety Intelligence Program partnership and will enable AstraZeneca to harness value from both public and now private repositories of safety-related information,” said Dr. Julie Barnes, Chief Scientific Officer.

“Making the safest medicines for our patients is a key priority for AstraZeneca. This project will enable us to use our preclinical toxicology information more effectively in identifying and understanding potential safety-related issues early in the drug R&D process,” said Dr. David Cook, Global Safety Assessment for AstraZeneca.
